For Upadana, art is about process. His work explores spirituality, as well as social and cultural issues, particularly in relation to contemporary life. He is interested in exploring materials and ideas to open up new perspectives and ways of seeing.
Born in 1983 in a small village in Gianyar, Bali, Upadana completed his Fine Art degree at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta in 2008. He has since been a finalist in numerous art awards and has exhibited across Bali, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, and Surabaya, as well as in Melbourne and Fremantle, Australia.
His solo exhibitions include Home at Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta (2014), Memory at Fremantle Arts Centre, Western Australia (2016), Mysty Myth at Orbital Dago, Bandung (2023), and Between Strength and Vulnerability at the National Glass Museum, Leerdam, Netherlands (2025). He also participated in a residency at Fremantle Arts Centre in 2016.
His selected group exhibitions include ART.BALI: Beyond the Myths at AB.BC, Nusa Dua (2018), Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia (2018), EBB AND FLOW: Contemporary Indonesian Sculpture from the Konfir Kabo Collection at Ballarat Art Gallery, Australia (2024), and Cross of the Matter at Redbase Art, Sydney, Australia (2024).
